Cross rate

LEVEL II

A cross rate is an exchange rate between two currencies that does not involve the local currency. It is calculated by using two other exchange rates in which both currencies are involved.

For example, consider a scenario where exchange rate between currency A and B (A/B) is known, and exchange rate between currency B and C (B/C) is also known. In this case, cross rate between currency A and C (A/C) can be calculated as follows:

A/C = A/B * B/C

The cross rate calculation can be useful when the exchange rate between two specific currencies is not directly quoted in the market. By using cross rates, traders can calculate the exchange rate between two currencies of their interest.
