The process of systematically allocating the cost of long-lived tangible assets to the periods during which the assets are expected to provide economic benefits.

Under IFRS, components of an asset are required to be depreciated separately using the component depreciation method.

Depreciation methods: Straight-line method, Double declining balance method, Units-of-production method
